Miss Julie research (my part of research from the group project 5min presentation)

The aspect that I will be talking about will be regarding Strindberg’s very early life within the first twenty years of his life in Sweden. One of the key historical events that happened within Sweden at that time was in 1851 two years after Strindberg’s birth. This was the formation of the society for religious freedom that helped in regards to societal acceptance of people of different cultures. The further allowance of this helped in setting the governmental viewpoint of alternate religions. This assisted to a level of tolerance accepted in Swedish society. Even later some women were also allowed to be in local elections setting the motions for the organisation that decades later would become the National association for Women’s suffrage.

Other key historical elements focused around the aspects of military defence against the powers of the Russian empire. In 1855 Sweden signed the November Treaty with England and France, guaranteeing Swedish-Norwegian territories against Russian aggression. Sweden-Norway promises not to cede territory or fishing rights to Russia. This was key not only towards economical factors of the time but primarily the social interactions of the time of Strindberg’s early life this is in turn contributed to an aspect of fear and uncertainty throughout Strindberg’s early life. The contributing factors added a level of fear in the era of time. Which did in fact lead to the demilitarisation of the Aland islands. Throughout this as well the living conditions within Sweden did appear to be slightly degraded as the social standpoint started rising during all of this fear mongering. Over the past ten years 30,000 people emigrated from Sweden to other countries. At the time that number was about a third of the number of individuals within the residency of Stockholm. These events may have impacted the opinions of people of the time.
