(Presentation lesson Cultural factors)
Within the context of the literary works there was plenty of controversy through theatre. Being the primary form of public expression at the time, before films, or radio. There were plenty of people expressing their views on controversial topics that most people of the era would not be comfortable talking about in the context of a conversation but instead could be analysed through a play often motivating/ forcing these important conversations to happen. Some of the primary themes throughout this era were those of romanticism, power and nature, last of which could often branch into human nature creating all sorts of issues. The key point of this however is that these themes at the time often rejected naturalism. Expressing instead, forms of actions that would play out the words instead, a technique developed from the era of loud crowds in a theatre. Another key element to address however was the levels of nationalism and pride throughout Sweden that noted it to preserve its culture in the best way that it could which may have prompted why a play like Miss Julie would be banned as it was something that was sourced by a man who took advantage of the division of the classes.
