Theatre log 05/09/17

In regards to people's personal opinions regarding Miss Julie, most people appeared to not understand or enjoy the play itself. Which prompted people to re-read the play. After a re-read many of the themes within the play become a lot clearer in itself, the themes that largely became a lot clearer in the structure of the play was mostly focused regarding the plays implied meaning. One such example of this was in regards to the final line in the whole of the play. After being handed the razor, "Miss Julie walks out determined", This in itself gives implied context that the audience have to figure out for themselves. Due to Strindberg's writing constraints of only two weeks this does appear to be a deliberate device that was implemented to save time diseregarding certain structural points of writing.

A key thing that was looked into with this lesson was an elaboration and the first demonstration of Stanislavski's given circumstances technique that was mentioned in the Bella Merlin book. The given circumstances exercise of introducing us to a doctor's waiting room was very interesting in demonstrating themes of realism/naturalism. In this respect it showed us that simply thinking an action can give a character a physical change. (This will be something to take into consideration later whilst developing characters for future performances). This was also a good way of introducting a layered approach to an introduction of Stanislavksi's themes, the next being tempo and rythmn. Giving the people on stage different illnesses seemed to spped up the tempo of the scene drawing more interest than simply just thinking I am a person that is sitting down. It is instead saying I am a person sitting down because I've got a bad cough, or my foot is hurting. In my opinion this has now set a precedent of how to deal with character motivations and is certainly a lead on to the seven questions of motivation.
